Column Shortcodes for Genesis – New WordPress Plugin Release

We are happy to release a new plugin to make using columns easier in your Genesis-based theme.  Genesis comes with a column feature built-in but you have to use the HTML editor to use it. And you need to be a little familiar with html ‘div’s.  This plugin takes care of that and requires only that you can find that square bracket thingy on your keyboard.

This plugin uses shortcodes. Shortcodes are similar to a keyboard shortcut. You put in a word like this: [ one-half ] and the keyboard will build the columns for you.  (shortcodes do NOT have spaces in them – that is just so that I can print them without them executing)

Column Shortcodes Available:

* [ one-half first ] and [ one-half ]
* [ one-third first ] and  [ one-third ]
* [ one-fourth first ] and [ one-fourth ]
* [ one-fifth first ] and [ one-fifth ]
* [ one-sixth first ] and [ one-sixth ]
* [ end-column ]

How to start the first column on the page

Genesis themes have columns built up to six columns across.  To have them spaced nicely you need to use the special shortcode ‘first’ in the square brackets for the first column.

How to tell WordPress where to END each column

When you would like the column to end, you must use [ end-column ].

For example:

[sws_blue_box box_size="543"] [ one-half first ] This is the text I’d like to place in the first column. Perhaps a list?

  • Columns
  • add
  • interest
  • to text

[ end-column ] [ one-half ] And this is the text I’d like to go in the second column. Perhaps an address would suit.

Box 1234
My City, Province
Canada [ end-column ] [/sws_blue_box]

The result

[one-half first] This is the text I’d like to place in the first column. Perhaps a list?

  • Columns
  • add
  • interest
  • to text

[end-column] [one-half] And this is the text I’d like to go in the second column. Perhaps an address would suit.

Box 1234
My City, Province
Canada

[end-column]

*Note: this plugin will only work if you have certain styles in your stylesheet.  They come default in Genesis child themes (aff link).
