There are 3 types of designers
You need to know which one your prospect is, and what they charge. Each of these types should have a very different pricing model, and yet few do.
Type 1: Designer & Developer in One
These are the ones who charge top dollar. You should expect to pay $3,000 and up for these. They should answer YES, NO, YES respectively to “Ask Before You Purchase” questions below. Example: Bill Erickson
Type 2: Designer & Plugin User
These are the ones who will answer YES to the plugin question. These people will use a plugin or Divi theme or a drag-and-drop interface to create the design that you’ve purchased.
You should never pay more than $1000 for this service. This is meant for beginner bloggers who need a beautiful custom theme but get less than 1000 page impressions per day. If you get more than 1000 page impressions per day you will have issues with page speed and possibly hosting accounts.
Type 3: Designer OR Developer OR Multi-person Firm
These are the peeps who are upfront about doing one or the other of the tasks. They will provide a design and a recommendation for a developer. Or they are a developer and recommend a designer.
Or they are a firm (like me) who have multiple people in the company – one for designing and one or more for developing. In my experience these firms offer beginner packages below $1000 – with templates. But also offer high end themes as well.
